A breathlessly entertaining encounter packed with blistering tries, relentless hits, and second-half drama, Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) held on to claim a 38-26 victory over Valley Fort.
Despite a dominant first-half display from HKFC’s powerhouse engine room, Valley Fort fought back with pure grit after the break, outscoring the hosts in the second half to leave everything on the pitch.
First-Half Blitz: HKFC Take Control
The match kicked off at a frantic pace, with early penalty exchanges immediately putting HKFC on the front foot. Valley Fort defensively set the standard early with crunching tackles from Rory and Jake Mahal, but HKFC’s high-tempo attack proved lethal inside the 22.
Just two minutes in, HKFC struck first, slicing through under the posts for a converted try to open a 7-0 lead. Valley Fort responded with defensive brilliance—Marcus forcing a turnover near halfway and Max Kelly stripping the ball to ignite the attack. However, handling errors hampered Valley's momentum.
Capitalizing on field position after a high-tackle penalty, HKFC crossed wide on the left in the 7th minute. Moments later, a sharp run off a short restart saw HKFC score again on the right wing, extending their lead to 19-0.
Valley Fort Ignite the Fightback
Trapped in their own 22, Valley Fort showed true character to dig themselves out:
14th Minute: Off a dominant set-piece scrum, scrum-half Ryan launched a sniping break down the wing. The ball swept crisply through every pair of hands along the backline, allowing Markku to finish brilliantly in the right corner.
16th Minute: Directly off the restart, Brandon fielded the ball near the 10-meter line and tore upfield on a sensational, run. Slipping tackles all the way down the left touchline, he grounded the ball under the posts. Ryan slotted the conversion, narrowing the deficit to 19-12.
Just as Valley Fort threatened a full comeback, HKFC's formidable pack reasserted dominance. A series of heavy carries in contact resulted in two late first-half tries—including a strike right on the half-time whistle—sending HKFC into the break holding a commanding 38-12 lead.
Second Half: Valley Fort’s Counter-Attack
Valley Fort entered the second half with renewed physical intensity. Heavy collisions from Marcus and Jimmy Mack stabilized the defense, while Declan’s trademark razor-sharp inside steps kept HKFC’s fringe defenders guessing.
Despite scrappy breakdown play and missed overlaps inside HKFC's 22, Valley Fort’s persistence finally yielded results:
1. The Edge-to-Edge Stunner
After sustained pressure in the middle of the park, Valley Fort strung together their finest passage of play. Excellent rucking from Marcus and fast recycling through Ryan, Edward, and Brandon stretched HKFC across the field. Brandon whipped a skip-pass out to Sean on the right wing, before the ball came sweeping back inside to Tye, who crashed through the center of the defense to score under the crossbar. Ryan added the drop-goal conversion.
2. Brandon’s Double Under the Posts
Building momentum off strong carries by Jake Mahal and Max Rosas, Valley Fort pinned HKFC inside their 22. Capitalizing on a penalty advantage, Brandon pounced on space near the breakdown, darting through a gap to dot down under the posts for his second try of the match.
As time ticked away, Valley Fort pushed hard for a losing bonus point with desperate late runs from Ryan and Sean. However, HKFC’s initial first-half buffer proved insurmountable, and the referee's final whistle sealed a 38-26 victory for HKFC.
Valley Fort take tremendous heart from a spirited second half where their backline structure and physical breakdown work shone through. For HKFC, an explosive start and power running in the tight proved to be the winning formula in a memorable Sunday clash.
