Valley Fort U14s w/c Mon 4 Dec

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all having a good week?

Well done to the Div 2 team who had a good win on Sunday beating HKU2 53-12

Message from coaches:

With a stunning day to play rugby and the xmas festivities coming up soon it was a great afternoon to play or watch rugby in the Valley.

Our Div 2 team have improved as each week goes by and sunday was another example of what they’re capable of.

The first half saw our players struggling to get to grips of the roles and team objectives , especially when they knew what to do as it was evident we lacked some direction as a group of players not been accountable for the roles .
This became frustrating as we played some good rugby in patches but to be cleared of our own ball at ruck times , where we got lazy in our own process .
By half time with a few words and players realising we can do this , the tides began to flow.
We secured multiple plays and rucks which enabled of backs good quick ball and maximise into points ,
We kept this pressure on the whole 2nd half and with our 2 subs we had for the day everyone just wanted more rugby which was very pleasing to see.
The key point was we started slow which an area we will be working on .
There were a few players who played out of positions .
Like George at 15 , Karl to flanker, Aitken to wing, Maxime to 9 . thanks to everyone who turned up and gave it their all,

It was a great result leading into the break with a 53 to 12 win .

Many thanks also to the parents who keep supporting the boys each week .
See you at training

Valley Fort U14s W/c Mon 20 Nov

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all having a good week so far?

Mixed results from the matches on Sunday.

Div 1 had a great win against Sandy Bay 43-19, please see note below from coach Deano:

The players from the start of our preparation all the way to the end of the final whistle became young men during that time.

The attitude , the application and will to play with dedication and vigour.

We had some much energy which grew with so many positives towards each other and grew as a team .

Outstanding aspects of the game

  • Positive atitude
  • Wanting to get it their all
  • Ball carrying with a purpose
  • Ball security process and not wanting to give it away
  • Line speed on defence to shut them down early
  • Chop tackle
  • Fire call & counter rucking

This was a joy to watch as a coach and from parents to see the lads play to their potential.

Theres alway a BUT , and that performance needs to be backed up with another good week of preparation / commitment / wanting to improve.

Areas to consider where we made some minor mistakes and let them into the game .

These points i call are controllable scenarios made by individuals where we the lads can address as they own individual review

  • Losing the ball into contact
  • Turn over ball due to not working hard in the contact & not placing long
  • NO communications on Defence

The positives out number the work ons so we are on track but like i said regards the traffic lights . lets get ourselves into the green as a group

Result 43 to 19 win

Div 2 were defeated by Flying Kukris 19-43, please see note below from coach Adam:

It was a bit of a mixed bag for the lads in Div 2.  Very slow start but we finished strong, with a try on the final whistle.

Positive Aspects
- When we had the ball in hand, we strung some great phases together
- We retained the ball well in the wide channels
- The backs passed well, getting the ball into space

Work-ons
- Everyone must come up as one line in defence
- We must not switch off in attack, as Jacko and Louis found themselves cleaning lots of rucks
- stay to think about the next phase before it has fully unfolded, try and be a step ahead
- Must go lower in the tackle

Some notable performances from the likes of Riley and Gary in attack.. Jacko, Louis and Karl in defence but player of the day went to Niccolo... He has only been playing rugby for 7-8 weeks and is improving ever week. great stuff.

Look forward to seeing you all down at training on Thursday!

Thanks Adam

Training this week:
Thursday 6.30-7.45pm HV6
Sunday 11.00-12.30pm HV6.

Ballboys:
We would like to field 4+ ballboys for the Prems and Knights matches on Saturday afternoon at HV.  Kick off is 3pm - please let me know if your son is available.

That’s all for now.

Any queries, please contact us.

Valley Fort U14s W/c Mon 6 Nov

Dear Parents & Players,

I hope everyone is having a good week so far?

Both Divisions played SKS last Sunday afternoon.  Div2 drew and Div1 suffered a big loss.
As always, a massive thank you to the boys that played on both Divisions.  We also wish Blake a speedy recovery after his knock on the pitch.

Onwards and upwards! We will re-group at training this week and prepare for the next fixture.

I know that a few of the boys are taking part in Team Fear that day, so please confirm your son’s availability by end Thursday this week.

Training this week:
Thursday 6.30-7.30pm HV6
Sunday 11.00-12.30pm HV6

Extra training:
Tuesday 6.30-7.30 HV6 - extra sessions are available for all boys (cost per session $150) with pro coaches Ruan DuPlooy and Grant Kemp.  These sessions have been well received by players over the last few weeks by improving individual skills.  Please let us know if your son is interested.

Questionnaire from HKRFU:
Please follow the link below and answer the questions in the survey for all your colts players.

https://form.jotform.me/72917660433459 (please cut and paste this link into your browser)

Touring Monaco side:
We have the opportunity to host a 7s Monaco side in Hong Kong next year (just before the Sevens).  They toured last year and are keen to repeat this year in a mini sevens tournament for U14s.  It would involve parents hosting some players for a couple of days.  Please let me know if you are interested in this.

I think that’s all for now.  Please look out for a coaches email in the next couple of days which will require some action from your son.

Any queries, please get in touch.

Thanks

Traffic lights assessment for all players

Dear Parents,

Deano and Adam have asked that you share the attached document with your son - this will make up part of the training session on Sunday with the coaches so it is important that your son is aware.

This traffic light system will enable all players to assess where they currently are and where they need to be.  Please discuss with your son and feel free to feedback to us if you can.

This will provide a progression for our teams moving forward in the season.

Thanks
Becky, Adam & Deano

Valley Fort U14s Important Info

Dear Parents,

I’m hoping this is the last you will hear from me before Sunday!

Note from coaches:
Dear Parents,

Hope you are all enjoying watching the improvements of your son and his team play this season.
I've noticed a great start to the season but still lots to work on:

The management team spend a fair bit of time each week planning to maximise trainings, up skill players and making team selections, this ensures that we can put 2 competitive teams out when scheduled to play.

Over this week and especially over the last 24 hrs we have had a number of pulls outs, unavailable players due to school activities or holidays . This is always going to happen and we do understand these commitments .
BUT all we ask is please go over the season schedule all the way to Dec 2017 and let us know when your son is not available or even maybe unavailable.

Letting us know late notice is not acceptable and not fair on those players that want to play .

Hope you all understand where we as Management are coming from to give the best opportunity to both our teams .

It came to a point where we nearly had to postpone a match this Sunday.

Anyway thanks for everything to date and see you all over the weekend

Many Thanks

Please see below revised team selection for Sunday.  The coaches very much appreciate the boys who can be available for both matches this weekend.

We have also revised the NAG squad - please see below.

Please get in touch if you have any queries,

Many Thanks

  • National Age Grade Selection
  • Ballboys
  • Outstanding kit

Matches on Sunday 22nd Oct:
Please be aware that we have a number of boys away this weekend due to school camps and half term.  It is therefore very important that your son shows up to play for his team (where selected) on Sunday at the correct time.  Please contact us as soon as possible if you think there may be a problem with this.  Any players that don’t show up risk letting the whole team down if we have to forfeit the match.

Div 1 team selection:

Div 2 team selection (10 a side this week):

National Age Grade Selection:

Please see note below from the Union:

Dear all,
With the school & club seasons well underway the process for National Age Grade selection has now begun.

This year see’s changes to the format of the selection process brought about through a thorough review process undertaken with the input of clubs & schools during the off season. These changes have included the introduction of a NAG U14 Girls squad and NAG Championship Tournaments for U14 & U16 boys as a pre cursor to the traditional trial format at Kings Park. The objective of the tournament is to allow players to demonstrate their core skills (catch, pass, tackle, contact area, game understanding) whilst playing with and against their peers. It is important to recognize that players will be judged on performance as opposed to a teams result

Boys U14
29th October 2017
NAG U14 10s Tournament – 10 a side (18 players per squad)
KGV (8am-1pm)

1st November 2017
NAG U14 Trials – circa 80 players selected from NAG Championship Tournament
Kings Park Pitch 2 (6-7.30pm)

All players selected are required to be at KGV as stated above between 8am-1pm on Sunday 29th October.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you think there may be a problem with your son attending these trials.

Ballboys:
We are always looking for ballboys and girls to cover both the Valley Prems and Knights teams on Saturday afternoons.  There is an opportunity for each boy to earn $100 if they can stay and ballboy for both matches.  The matches will take place at HV6 at 3pm and 4.30pm.  I am in charge of payment now so you will definitely get paid! Please contact me if your son is interested.

Outstanding Kit:
We are expecting this to be delivered to the club on Friday and I will try to get hold of it before matches on Sunday to give out to players.

That’s all for now!
Please contact us if you have any queries.

Thanks
Becky, Adam & Deano

Vallet Fort U14s w/c 9 Oct 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all having a good week so far?

It was a good weekend of rugby from the boys.  Despite both teams losing their matches, there was some really positive play.

Just to re-iterate our position this season - we are playing Div 1 and Div 2 matches on the same day.  This means that we don’t have the ability to take 20+ players to each match and each player chosen has an important role to play in their respective team.

Please see the schedule which I have attached again for your reference.  If you see any fixtures in the future that your son cannot attend please try to give us as much notice as possible so we can find a player to replace him.

We will also have some players who may be picked to play in one match and then bench for the next match.

Firstly Div 2:

USRC Tigers2 unfortunately beat us by 2 points (sorry I don’t have the final score).  The boys were unlucky and there was some ‘dubious’ decisions made by the referee - we have fed back our concerns over the referee to the Union.

Unfortunately, our Co-Captain Matthew was injured just before half time and has a broken nose.  We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Secondly Div 1:

HKFC1 - we lost this match but there was some excellent play and most importantly the boys didn’t lose their spirit.  I’m afraid again I don’t have the final score (I’m blaming jet-lag) but will endeavour to improve on my match reporting skills in the future!

A big thank-you to the Div 2 players that showed up to support Div 1 on Sunday to cover the bench it was much appreciated and showed an excellent commitment to their team.

Training this week:
Thursday - HV6 6.30 - 7.45pm
Sunday - HV6 11.00 - 12.30pm
All players to attend training this week.

Valley Fort U14s W/c Mon 18 Sept

Good Afternoon,

I hope you are all having a good week so far?

Important Info for this season:
Please note the changes made to our match schedule this season will mean the following:

  • Div 1 and Div 2 will both play on the same day.
  • Smaller squad numbers for both Div 1 and Div 2.
  • More game time for all players.
  • Movement between Div 1 and Div 2 (apart from Ring-fenced players).

Because of this, we will need commitment from all players to be available for their matches. Just to give you all some background,  we were presented with an option at the beginning of August to make all Div 2 in U14s 10 a side rugby.  Valley Fort, Sandy Bay, Football Club and USRC Tigers all persuaded the Union that it is important for our players to maintain the 15 a side format to continue to develop their rugby skills and that we have the numbers required.
We do have the numbers required but the bench will only have 3 or 4 players, therefore you can understand the commitment required for the boys to turn up to both training and matches.

The coaches and I will continue to send a weekly email to you all on Tuesday with details for training and matches, and we would like to hear from you by the end of Tuesday if your son is not available for a match on the following Sunday.
The teams will continue to be picked following training on a Thursday evening, and on a match week I will send an email on Friday announcing the team.

Training this week:
Thursday - 6.30-7.45pm HV6
Sunday - Div 1 only 11.00-12.30pm HV6

Match this week:
Div 2 will play HKU2 at HV6 with a 15.15 kick off.  Please ensure all players are pitch-side at 14.30 with lots of water, a mouthguard and wearing full kit.

Ballboys:
Our Valley premiership team is playing at Kings Park this Saturday 23rd Sept 14:45pm to 16:30pm.  We are looking for ballboys please for this match.  All ballboys will be paid $50 for their efforts.

Kit:
I have a list of kit required for the following boys;
Oscar Hung - Size large top, shorts and socks.
Jack O - Size xxs top
Iggy - Size xs top
Karl - Size xs top.

Adam:
Adam has finished his amazing Mongolian golf adventure and we are looking forward to seeing him soon to hear all about it.

That’s all for now, thanks for reading to the end!

All queries, please contact Deano or I.

Thanks
Becky & Deano

Valley Fort U14s W/c Mon 11th Sept

Good Evening,

I hope you are having a good week?

I have a few things to get through this week so please read carefully!

Kit:
The distribution of kit was fairly smooth on Sunday, thank you to the lovely ladies who helped out.
If your son has a shirt (or shorts) that don't fit, please bring them back to training on Thursday evening and I will check the spares and sort them out.  If your son wasn’t there to collect on Sunday, I will have them on Thursday at training.

Match schedule:
I have a draft schedule but have been told that changes are being made after the Colts committee meeting last night.  I will send it out to you as soon as possible.
There are some changes to the format this year, Div 1 and Div 2 will play on the same day and hopefully close in location and time.  This will be beneficial to our U14s for a couple of reasons; firstly they will all train together on both Thursday and Sunday but also can lend support to one another before or after their own match.

The first matches will be played on Sun 24 Sept (at this stage).  I will confirm.

HKRFU registration cards:
If your son doesn’t have one of these, please email me a passport photo and a copy of their HKID or Passport.  The union have decided that we can submit applications for these cards electronically now.  All players must have them by Sept 30th to be able to play in the league this year.

Training:
Thursday - HV6 6.30-7.30pm
Sunday - HV6 11.00-12.30pm - please note new time

Ballboys:
Please see attached the schedule for the Valley Prems and Knights this season.  We need to supply ballboys for each of the home matches at HV6.  I will be sending reminders weekly, and interested boys can earn $50 per match.

That’s all for now.

If you have any queries, please contact either Deano or I.

Thanks
Becky & Deano

Valley Fort U14s w/c Mon 28 August

Good Afternoon,

I hope you are all well and having a good week so far?

A few things to cover this week:

Training:
Thursday - There is no training on Thursday this week - we do not have the pitch.
Sunday - 10.30am - 11.45am HV6.  Coach Taufai Komiti will be joining coach Deano this week.

Kit Distribution:
This is due to happen on Sunday at training - this should be a fairly straight-forward process as most players have been fitted already.  Please note that if you haven’t registered and paid this seasons’ fees, this must be done before Sunday.

Match Schedule:
We are waiting on confirmation from HKRFU for this seasons’ match schedule.  I will send it out to you all as soon as I have it.

Please ensure all Colts bring a mouthguard and plenty of water for training.

Whats App:
5 parents have confirmed they are interested in a whats app group.  If anyone else thinks it would be a good idea then please let me know soonest.  If not, I’m more than happy to maintain only email contact.

That’s all for now.
See most of you on Sunday,

Thanks
Becky & Deano

Valley Fort U14s this week

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all enjoying the Typhoon day and staying safe inside?

We are officially starting our season this weekend so hoping to see all the boys at training this week.  As most of you know, Adam (our pro coach) is away in Mongolia until the end of September doing amazing things for charity, so Deano is running all the sessions with some help from other available pro coaches.

Well done to all the boys who have managed to come down to Happy Valley for the last couple of Thursday evenings and take part in Deano’s conditioning sessions.  The sessions have been tough, but necessary for those boys who haven’t had much off season training!

The emphasis for the start of this season will be fitness, conditioning and covering technical and tactical aspects of the game.  All players need to come prepared to training sessions with the right attitude, lots and lots of water and a mouthguard.  We are planning on starting our season the way we finished last season with some great play and teamwork.

I am waiting on confirmation of kit delivery, at this stage I believe it will be ready for distribution at training on Sunday 3rd September.

Training this week:
Thursday - HV6 6.30pm - 7.30pm
Sunday - HV6 10.30am - 11.45am

Please note that Happy Valley pitch 8 has changed it’s name to Happy Valley pitch 6!

Please see below a note from Matthew Rodden | Community Referee Manager | Hong Kong Rugby Union
World Rugby has introduced some Law Trials that came into force in Hong Kong on the 1st of August. It is important as we move towards the start of the season that all coaches/players/referees/supporters at all levels are aware of these Laws. There are some fundamental changes to the way the game will be played and refereed.

World Rugby has put together a presentation explaining the various Law Trials. Video examples are included. This presentation can be downloaded from the following link:

We ask that you take the time to look through this with your son for the coming season.

One more thing - would you be interested in a whats app group for our age group?  Please let me know your thoughts.

I think that’s about all for now, if you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Thanks
Becky & Deano

Just a quick note to let you now that pre-season training will continue at HV 6 (previously HV8) this Thursday evening with coach Deano from 6.30-7.30pm.

There will be no training this Sunday.

I will send an email with more information next week after a meeting with the coaches.  If you have any feedback or suggestions to pass on to us regarding this season then please do so.

Thanks
