Valley Fort U9 2017/18

Dear Parents and U9 players,

We hope that all of you have had an enjoyable summer with your families and friends, and are now looking forward to the upcoming 2017/18 rugby season.  We are delighted to see that, with the exception of those that relocated overseas, almost all of last year’s U8 players have returned to Valley Fort this year.  In addition, we welcome a number of new players to the Club this season.

Training schedule

The first U9 training session of the season will take place at St Stephen's college sports pitch in Stanley on Sunday, 3rd September from 09.30am - 10.45am (please arrive at 9:00 for kit distribution – see below).  The U9 teams will train at the far end of the field – see pitch layout attached.  Remember that there is no parking available at St. Stephens.

Attached is a schedule of the training dates, times and location through the end of the year.  This also includes a list of the local rugby festivals in which the U9 teams will participate.  Please mark the following key dates in your diaries:

  • Sunday 5th November 2017 – USRC Tigers Festival
  • Friday 10th November 2017 – First Friday Evening Training (6:30pm to 8pm @ HKIS).
  • Sunday 26th November 2017 – HKU / Sandy Bay Festival
  • Sunday 10th December 2017 – Flying Kukris Festival
  • Sunday 21st January 2018 – Tai Po Festival
  • Sunday 11th February 2018 – Valley Fort Festival
  • 2nd – 4th March 2018 – KL Saracens Intl Tour
  • Sunday 11th March 2018 – HKFC Festival
  • 6th – 8th April 2018 – Hong Kong Sevens

Friday night training sessions for U9 to U12 teams will commence on 10th Nov. at HKIS.  Transport arrangements will be communicated closer to the date.

Kit distribution

As mentioned in the Club email earlier today, the distribution of our new playing kit is expected to take place on 3rd September at St. Stephens.  We need 3 to 4 volunteers from among the U9 parents’ community to assist with distribution for our age group.  If you can assist please let me know.

Please note that there is a small chance that this schedule may slip a little in which case we will let you know in advance.

Other kit and training requirements

Each kit pack will include a 'boil and bite' mouthguard, however, if you wish to get a custom made mouthguard made in advance please check with one of the dental surgeries listed at this url link http://www.valleyfort.com/baysidedental.aspx or with your family dentist.  Similar to last year, the Club has invited Armory mouthguards to St Stephen's but they are not confirmed yet.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  As the weather is likely to remain very hot and humid for several more weeks, it is critical that every player takes lots of water and wears sunblock to training.

Coaching

We are excited to announce that Carl Marks from Durban in South Africa is the designated professional coach that will work with us this season.  Alongside Carl, we will have an additional pro coach available for the month of September to assist with the transition to tackle rugby.

This season the Club has appointed a new training coordinator, Ruan Du Plooy, to work with the U9 to U12 teams to develop and deliver training session plans.

Ruan, Carl and the volunteer coaches are all excited to be involved in this transition season for the players.

Recruitment and Open Day

With the kids already back to school, or going in the next week or two, please remind them to canvass their friends and classmates that may be interested in playing rugby.  The Club will host a recruitment day on Sunday 24th September (U9s will be at the Fort).

Communications

More updates and announcements will be made both at a Club level and for the U9s in the coming weeks as the season gets under way.

In the meantime, if anyone has any questions, please send me an email (allanfinnerty@gmail.com) or whatsapp at 90951104.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Allan

Valley Fort Rugby U8 =>U9 – REGISTER AND GET KIT FITTED BY JUNE 25

Dear Parents,

As previously described, if your child will be continuing with us in Rugby next year (and I hope all will), please register online: http://www.valleyfort.com/MembershipRegistration.aspx[valleyfort.com] and follow the instructions to go to Escapade Sports in Repulse Bay and get your child’s Kit fitted by June 25 so that they will have their Kit (with their name printed) at the first practice in the Fall.  Parents that will be coaching should also get fitted for the Kit as well.

Allan and I look forward to seeing everyone after the Summer break!

Regards,

Michael

VF U8 -> U9

Dear Parents,

Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed coaching your kids in U8 this last year.  I hope all of them will continue with U9 and I trust that the four weeks of tackle transition training has hopefully dispelled most, if not all, of the concerns that some of you may have had with regard to full contact Rugby. Next season will be awesome! We will really see our kids playing real rugby!  Please register your kids as early as possible and follow the guidelines below regarding Kit fitting.

Next year I will be joined by Allan Finnerty as co-head coach of U9 so that I can draw upon his rugby playing experience. I strongly encourage any other dads that have rugby playing experience (particularly in last 10 years or so) to put your hand up to be lead coach of a team. Although we will have the support of one pro coach at U9 to help us design and run our trainings, we will still need the full support of our parent coaches to make sure everything is put into action.

Regards,

Michael George DeSombre
