VF Rugby update 6th October

Good Afternoon,

I hope that you, and your kids, are enjoying the Mid-Autumn Festival holidays.

This week:

KL Tour

Charity donations

This Sunday most of our Colts are playing in league games – including our U14 Girls I believe. Good luck to all. Training is on for the remaining Colts age groups who do not have games scheduled.

All Minis (U5s - U12s) are at St Stephen’s this weekend:

U5’s to U8’s: 08:30am to 09.45am

U9s, U10s, U10G, U12G: 09.30am to 10.45am (warm up OFF the pitches 9.30am to 9.45am)

U11s, U12s: 10:30am - 12:00pm (warm up OFF the pitches 10.30am to 10.45am)

KL Saracens International 10s – our usual Mini KL Tour

Valley Fort usually travels on tour to the KL Saracens International 10s Tournament in March each year. We recently received news that the Saracens will NOT to holding their festival in 2018 – they make reference to a number of reasons for their decision which we are trying to get more information on. This is a festival that is well attended by other outside Malaysia – HK usually sees HKFC, Flying Kukris and VF attending and Singapore usually has Tanglin, Singapore Cricket Club and Centaurs attending. Obviously this is not great news but we (all of the clubs listed) are seeing if we can assist KL Saracens in putting on their festival. If the festival doesn’t go ahead we are looking at other tour options around the same dates. More details will follow once this situation becomes clearer.

Charity donations

At the end of last season we collected old playing kit, boots and used balls and sent them (thanks to Swire Shipping who absorbed the costs) to Fiji. As a reminder Fiji was extremely badly affected by Cyclone Winston in February last year. The storm was the most intense cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere on record and the islanders are still suffering from a lack of resources and aid. Swire shipping also sent school furniture donated by HKIS. Many thanks to to Ashlee Schroth who spearheaded this on the club’s behalf as well as Tim Blackburn who put together the Swire part in this process. All items were distributed to three schools in Fiji in late September. See the attached photos and click on this link for more information:

Once we have the replacement Kukri jerseys we will be taking in last year’s old kit, boots, etc to donate to charity later in the year. More information on this next week.

The club is extremely fortunate to have the backing of some excellent companies – many of these companies are truly world leading firms while others are more centric to HK but are still Country leading in their fields! I want to extend a massive thank you to them all: Societe Generale (one of Europe’s largest Financial Services firms with its Asia Pacific HQs in HK); Mayer Brown JSM (one of the leading law firms in Hong Kong and the Asia region); TV5 Monde (the world’s first channel in French with 60 million viewers a week via its 11 TV channels); Swire Properties/TaiKoo Place (a global developer & manager of commercial, retail, hotel and residential properties); Marriott Rewards (a world leading rewards program covering the complete Marriott group); Acuris (formerly Mergermarket Group- the leading provider of business intelligence and research for fixed income, transactions, infrastructure, compliance and equities); Three Blind Mice (recently voted one of the coolest places with great food in Wan Chai by Sassy Hong kong) and (soon to be launched online supermarket getting your premium European goods direct to your door).

We could not survive as a club without the support of these businesses  (and the parents who bring them to the table), so please take a moment to check out what they do.

Lastly if you have time this Saturday I’d recommend that you take your kids to watch the Valley Prems vs. HKCC at Aberdeen. Kick off it at 4.30PM. Valley will have a lot to prove after their frustrating narrow defeat last weekend.

All the best

Chairman, VF
