Valley Fort Chairman's update - February 12

Valley Fort parents,

Now that everybody’s back in Hong Kong, it’s going to be a busy few weeks, with the KL Tour next weekend followed immediately by the bigger and better Valley Fort Festival in Sandy Bay on February 26. By the way, thanks to all of you who signed up for the CNY Camp, and thanks to the pro coaches who made it a great success. We had over 40 participants on both days and a good time was had by all.

I’ll keep this message brief with a few essentials that you need to know. A more detailed message will go out shortly to those of you going on the KL tour – we have over 160 kids playing in KL and a travelling group of over 300. Here’s what I will cover:

  1. Rugby this weekend
  2. KL tour
  3. Valley Fort Festival volunteering
  4. Sevens tickets update
  5. Valley Fort Six Nations Fantasy League

1. Rugby this weekend

Friday, February 10. 6.30 to 8.00 HKIS training for U9 through U12, including girls. Jessie has already circulated the bus schedule.

Saturday, February 11. 4.30pm at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre, a.k.a. “The Rock”, the top of the Premiership table clash between SocGen Valley and Hong Kong Scottish. Both teams are locked together on 43 points. Go and support our lads!

Directions: 290 Nam Cheong Street, Hong Kong; MTR: Shek Kip Mei (Exit C)   MAP LINK

And on Saturday night, it’s round 2 of the Six Nations, with Italy taking on Ireland followed by Wales vs England and then France vs Scotland on Sunday evening.

Sunday, February 5

  • At Stanley Fort. Plan for delays in entering the Fort as there will be a security check. While you’re at the Fort, go visit the Clubhouse where Chez Patrick will be serving coffee, pastries and more. Jessie will have all our latest merchandise which is well worth checking out.
    • 9.45 to 11.30: U9, U10, U10G, U12G
    • 10.00 to 11.30: U7, U8
    • 10.15 to 11.30: U5, U6
  • At St. Stephen’s. There is no parking at St. Stephen’s
    • 9.00 to 10.30: U11
    • 10.30 to 12.00: U12

Don’t forget to bring mouth guards, plenty of water, sunscreen and plenty of enthusiasm!

Next weekend: Please note that while many kids will be travelling to KL next weekend, for those in Hong Kong we will have the same regular training schedule as per above on Friday (Feb 17) and Sunday (Feb 19).

Colts, please refer to emails from head coaches.

2. KL Tour, February 17 to 19

I think we’re all set. Travel plans are all confirmed, the organisers are ready and we have our own schedule of entertainment at and around the hotel. I will send a separate message to all those going on the tour. And we will of course provide an update afterwards. Tour t-shirts will be distributed (for a modest fee) to KL tourists at training on Sunday and will be available to all members for purchase at the clubhouse from subsequent weekends.

3. Valley Fort Festival, February 26

The organizers, led by George Von Burg, have put in a massive amount of work and I’m excited by what will be on offer at our Festival at Sandy Bay. We have additional sponsor support specifically for the festival from Marriott Rewards (thanks Richard Boyer), Swire Properties (thanks Tim Blackburn) and Ogilvy (thanks Adam O’Connor). We will be bringing the U5 mini mini festival that we pioneered 2 years ago at St. Stephen’s to the festival itself; we will also have a coaches touch tournament where Valley Fort coaches will be up against 10 other clubs (all of this taking place on the central pitch 3 from 12 to 2pm). We are bringing a large range of F&B choices (thanks Ed Rolston) and new activities to really engage the kids between their games. Given all that we are planning to accomplish we will need lots of help from volunteers: to set up the evening before, to run various elements of the festival throughout the day, and to help clear up at the end. Many hands make light work, so please put up your hands and volunteer. Your head coaches will be reaching out for help, but you can also contact George Von Burg at gjvb@mac.com directly. Remember that volunteers will get priority when we allocate Sevens tickets….

4. Sevens tickets update

For those of you who entered the public ballot for Sevens tickets, you should have received an email (from “Hong Kong Sevens”) a couple of days ago informing you whether you had won the right to purchase tickets, or not. I think our family outcome was typical – none for me or my wife, but our helper got 2 Friday tickets. Hopefully many of you were lucky. I have been asked whether Valley Fort will buy tickets from you if you don’t want them – we will, but we will just pay face value for the tickets and not the HKD100 admin fee.

I’m still working through with Hannette Otten and Hester Grisel, who kindly offered to help with the Valley Fort process for Sevens tickets, how we will capture requests and manage the process. Expect to hear in a couple of weeks.

5. Valley Fort Six Nations Fantasy League

We’ve got 17 people signed up in the league, and after the first weekend of action, some familiar patterns are developing. A Mallinson is in the lead, and I’m languishing near the bottom with my not-so-awesome “Olly’s Awesome Charimans XV”. The table seems to split somewhere in the middle with a bit of a gap between top half and bottom half. The top half picked Stuart Hogg (and got 19 points for his performance), the bottom half didn’t.

And so the leaderboard:

  1. Phili’s Vikings managed by Philippine Mallinson (U12G)                  92 points
  2. James Donnelly (U7)                                                                                      90 points
  3. George Maltas (U13)                                                                                      90 points

While you may struggle to catch up, you can still join up and start playing. I’ll keep a record of the table this weekend and we can have a prize for the best catch up player. It’s a lot of fun and so I’d encourage you to join, and to also sign up for your kids too. Click on the link below, register and then select your team. Remember to do this before 10pm on Saturday night when the next round of matches starts.

All the best for the weekend,

Olly
