from the Coach:
The Hong Kong Sevens - what a way to round off the season.
The highlight of Friday and Saturday was half time during the New Zealand v Tunisia game (closely followed by Hong Kong's heroic effort against the eventual plate winners France and England's nail biter against Samoa).
Then Sunday morning, and our chance to play in front of the crowds. The start time was reasonable this year - all you needed was your ticket, boots ....
At 8:15 the VF2 team lined up against the Tai Po Dragons. A solid defensive display kept the ball in the opposition half for most of the game, but a lack of passing when in space again contributed to the lack of a clear chance to get the ball over the line. It did look like we got the ball over the line once, but with 6 TPD players underneath the ball and 6 VF players we were unlikely to get a decision! We defended as a team but attacked as individuals - there is always something to work on. So 0 - 0 it was.
At 8:30 the VF1 team kicked off against HKFC1, a match both sides (players and coaches) were desperate to win. The play from both sides was, as usual, well organised, highly committed and great to watch. HKFC1 came out attacking from the start, but ultimately couldn't find enough gaps to get through to the try line. VF put on another big and resolute defensive display from the start, playing most of the game in our half. But as is the case in the main event, strong defense followed by a turn-over and a gap is all you need, and it was almost there, but only almost. So another 0 - 0, but another result to be proud of.
So that is just about it (Dinner and Aberdeen Festival still to come). None of the attacking rugby that Phil has tried to make our teams play over the year, but
courage, commitment and determination
and another great day out for the boys.
The rest of the day was all about grown up rugby, well mostly ...
Hope you all enjoyed the season, the Singapore Tour, the Richard Hawkes Cup and the Sevens - we did.
